The role of MRFs is changing under EPR. Here’s what’s happening in Québec.
Québec is transitioning to a new curbside recycling system managed by Éco Entreprises Québec (ÉEQ), set to begin in 2025. This shift involves transforming existing Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs) into service providers for ÉEQ, which will take over tasks such as material acceptance, promotion, and finding buyers for recyclables. The new system will standardize materials accepted across the province. While the MRFs will retain their autonomy and business models, they must meet new performance standards, including capture rates and bale purity. Investments are planned to upgrade MRFs to meet these requirements. ÉEQ is working collaboratively with facilities, providing support and guidance to ensure smooth implementation of the new system.
